Tijdens de ceremonie werd een trainingsmissie gevlogen. Bij terugkomst op de basis
was er een speciaal onthaal verzorgd door de brandweer.
After the ceremony commenced, the
crowds exited the hangar to observe four
Dutch and American F-16s flying a routine
training mission with pattern work
overhead. A little ways from where the
throng of people stood, two base fire
engines sat facing each other on the
ramp waiting for the planes to land.
Members of the base fire department
used the water hoses to create an arch in
the sky under which one of the Dutch F-16
Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) jets slowly pulled
through to face the guests.
Following the display of aircrafts, the
guests attended a luncheon hosted by the
RNLAF at the Yoxford Inn, the base dining
facility. Served was a traditional
Indonesian Rijsttafel, “rice table”, a
common meal for many Dutch. The buffet
style fare consisted of rice accompanied
by many spicy side dishes. Indonesian
culture has been intimately incorporated
into Dutch tradition since World War II,
when many people from the Indonesian
colonies came to the Netherlands to
serve in the Dutch military.
Originally becoming a regular meal
served in military dining facilities, now
Indonesian restaurants are more popular
in the Netherlands than any other cultural
food. Each table in the dining hall was
adorned with a tiny flag stand holding
small American and Dutch flags. Also
included on the tables were menus
detailing each dish and how it had been
prepared, as well as note cards along the
buffet line explaining how to best serve
each dish.
Guests were invited to enjoy a base tour
after lunch was finished. Buses were
provided to visit the operations building
with Col. Craig Wallace, commander of
the Operations Group; the simulator
building with Maj. Bernard Willis, 178th
Plans Officer and chief of training devices;
and the fire house with Senior Master Sgt.
Andy Hennigan, base fire department
chief. Also included in the tour was a drive
by the airfield and control tower, and a
look around the hangar with Master Sgt.
Nick Grothjan, 178th Dock Chief. “We are
proud to be participating in this mission,”
said Col. Lohnes. “But no matter how
wide our global missions expand, our
people will continue to be our most
treasured resource.”
With this move successfully underway,
the 178th Fighter Wing has already begun
preliminary talks on possibly extending its
new training mission to other European
countries in the future.

April 24, 2007 commemorated another
step forward in the long and friendly
history between the United States and the
Netherlands. The 178th Fighter Wing was
proud to host a ceremony in the base
Power Complex Hangar to officially
welcome the Royal Netherlands Air Force
to the Springfield-Beckley Air National
Guard Base, Springfield, Ohio and
celebrate the progress made by joining
missions.
More than 500 hundred civilians and
service members turned out to participate
in the event. Distinguished guest
speakers, introduced by 178th Fighter
Wing Commander, Colonel Richard
Lohnes, included the Honorable Ted
Strickland, Governor of Ohio; Mr.
Christiaan M.J. Kröner,
Ambassador Extraordinary and
Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of the
Netherlands to the United States; the
Honorable George Voinovich, United
States Senator; the Honorable Dave
Hobson, Ohio 7th Congressional District;
RNLAF Major General Erik Jan Oliemans,
Deputy Commander of the Royal
Netherlands Air Force and Army Major
General Gregory Wayt, the Adjutant
General of Ohio.
They spoke on the ongoing friendship
between Americans and the Dutch, all the
hard work and dedication that brought
about this opportunity and the great
economic benefits of combining missions
– to include more than 100 jobs being
brought to Ohio.
The ceremony began with the 178th
Fighter Wing Base Honor Guard posting
the colors.
The Netherlands flag was carried by an Air
Force Junior Reserve Officers’ Training
Corps Detachment OH-011 Honor Guard
member, whose family is of Dutch decent.
The United States Air Force Band of Flight,
from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base,
played the Netherlands National Anthem
followed by the United States National
Anthem. The Honor Guard members also
presented the Dutch 306 Squadron flag.
After solemnly carrying the encased
standard down the red carpet, the
members slowly unfurled it before
handing it on stage.
The colors were then ceremoniously
passed from MajGen Oliemans to MG
Wayt to Col. Lohnes, to Lt. Col. Anthony
Montecalvo, commander of the
Netherlands Detachment Springfield
Ohio, officially marking a new home for
members of the Dutch flying squadron.
This is the third mission change for the
306 Squadron since it was founded more
than 50 years ago. Members of the
original 306 Squadron joined together to
create the new NDSO.
